Fontstand International Typography Conference

The fourth annual typography conference is coming to Dublin. The first day of the event starts with a series of practical workshops focused on type design, scripting, and type usage. The second day offers a rich program of talks and presentations about various aspects of typography in print, motion design, and branding.
Organized by Fontstand, the typeface discovery and rental app, in collaboration with the TU Dublin School of Art and Design, and School of Media, and Typography Ireland.

Dublin is easily accessible by plane with direct flights from all over the world. The conference venue is conveniently located near the city center.

The city offers a range of hotels and bed & breakfast options. Most of the speakers will be staying in The Hendrick hotel in Smithfield, the vibrant street art area of Dublin.

Typeface Design for Non-Type Designers
with Matteo Bologna (Mucca Typo) and Ethan Cohen (Dinamo)

This short and intense workshop is a great opportunity to get started in designing type. Go beyond choosing the same typefaces from the type menu to creating your own! You’ll learn the basics of designing and generating a variable font with font-design software Glyphs (Mac only).

Demystifying Font Licensing
with Joyce Ketterer (Darden Studio)

When you ‘buy’ fonts, you purchase limited rights to use them. In this workshop with the Darden Studio CEO Joyce Ketterer, End User License Agreements (EULAs) will be discussed from both perspectives, as a type foundry protecting their work, and as a font user utilizing fonts for commercial and non-commercial purposes.

Python for Designers
with Roberto Arista (Typotheque)

An in­tro­duc­tion to pro­gram­ming in Python language, working in the popular application DrawBot for the Mac, to generate and explore visual ideas using code. Python can help you de­sign and make books, il­lus­tra­tions, data vi­su­al­iza­tions, maps, and an­i­ma­tions, as well as han­dle web­sites, and more. You will need to bring your own laptop with MacOS.

Hebrew Type Design
with Yanek Iontef and Daniel Grumer (Fontef)

Learn how to design Hebrew typefaces in this short workshop. In the first part of the workshop, Yanek and Daniel will guide you through the history and contemporary use of Hebrew type, analyzing the Hebrew letters and their development. In the second part, participants will draw sample Hebrew words based on the existing Latin typeface. You will be encouraged to draw by hand on paper, but you can also work digitally.

Cyrillic Type Design
with Ilya Ruderman (CSTM Fonts)

Learn how to design Cyrillic typefaces in this short workshop. In the first part of the workshop Ilya will guide you through the history and contemporary use of Cyrillic type, and different Cyrillic languages and their needs. In the second part, participants will draw sample Cyrillic words based on an existing Latin typeface. You are encouraged to draw manually on paper, but working digitally is also possible.

Join Mary Ann Bolger, a lecturer in Design History and Visual Culture at the School of Media, TU Dublin, for a walk through Dublin, drawing your attention to the cultural significance of overlooked letters and reflect on their production, and the stories behind the material traces.
