29LT Ravi Typeface consisting of 8 weights (Thin, Light, Regular, Medium, Semi Bold, Bold, Extra Bold, and Black) that was inspired from the Naskh calligraphic style was drawn up with a modern-day feel. In order to fashion a more so practical model of the Naskh style, the proportions of the letterforms were modified. Some of these specific modifications included long teeth, open large counters purposely placed on top of the baseline for enhanced legibility, and the shortening of ascenders and descenders, in order to achieve consistency in typesetting. These aspects provide the script’s narrative and storytelling aspect, and relater is what Ravi means in Farsi. The calligraphic characteristics of the 29LT Ravi Typeface makes it highly suitable for print and screen publications due to its high legibility in small copy text. It is also an appealing selection for branding and design of visual identities due to its unique square outline structure drawn in an Iranian typographic flavor. An extended set of Arabic ligatures and elongated stylistic sets are added to fonts to give the type-family an elegant characteristic which brings it closer to being a refined calligraphy. The 29LT Ravi Typeface design started while Reza Rakhtiarfard was undertaking the typeface design course at the “Vije Institute of Visual Communication” in Tehran, between 2010 and 2014, under the guidance of typographer and calligrapher Damoon Khanjanzadeh. In 2016, the 29LT Ravi Typeface design was finalized under the consultancy of Pascal Zoghbi that led to its publication by the end of the same year.
