Basilar is a rational sans-serif typeface that draws inspiration from the early 20th-century German typeface Venus, which influenced the development of sans-serif typefaces in the Swiss Style. It incorporates elements such as constrained letter widths, slightly condensed lowercase letters, and eccentric proportions, such as the generously sized bowl of the letter ‘a’. Basilar combines a nuanced vintage charm with rigorous precision and accuracy. Through meticulous systematization of metrics, Basilar’s glyphs are designed with a reduced set of widths, creating a compact and subtly mechanized rhythm. The concept is taken to its extreme in Basilar Mono, where all characters share the same width.
